First time in Indonesia: the checklist before a Komodo boat trip

Updated 11 October 2026

Most visitors enter on a 30-day Visa on Arrival with a passport valid six months, an onward ticket and a free online arrival card. Fly to Labuan Bajo via Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, carry rupiah, install an eSIM, and bring your passport on the boat: the park ticket of IDR 250,000 a day is issued in your name.

Entry: the visa, the passport, the arrival card

Sort these three before you book a flight, because the airline checks them before Indonesia does. Most nationalities enter on the 30-day Visa on Arrival, bought at the airport or online in advance as an e-VoA; citizens of ASEAN countries enter visa-free. Your passport needs six months of validity beyond arrival and two blank pages, and you need proof of an onward or return ticket.

Within 72 hours before landing, file the All Indonesia arrival card online. It is free on the official site; third-party sites that charge for it are not the official channel. If you stop over in Bali and leave the airport, the island's tourist levy is a separate payment, made online.

Verify before travelling: in August 2026 Indonesia's immigration chief announced a higher Visa on Arrival fee, and no start date has surfaced since, so the table shows the fee in force when we checked. Check the immigration site the week you fly. Any lists of extra visa-free countries from commercial sites are unconfirmed too.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)Open to nationals of 97 listed countries, including most of Europe, the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the UK, Japan, South Korea, China, India and the Gulf states. Other nationalities apply in advance at evisa.imigrasi.go.id.
e-VoAThe same 30-day visa, applied for online before you travel at evisa.imigrasi.go.id. Once approved, you must enter within 90 days.
VoA / e-VoA priceIDR 500,000 per person; children pay the same. Fees can change, so check the official site before you fly.
Length of stay30 days from the day you arrive, single entry
ExtensionOnce, by 30 days (60 days in total), for IDR 500,000. Apply at an immigration office about a week before the first 30 days end.
Visa-free entry30 days, not extendable, for citizens of ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste and Vietnam.
PassportValid for at least 6 months after your arrival date, with at least 2 blank pages
Onward ticketProof of a return or onward ticket is required for a VoA
All Indonesia arrival cardFree and compulsory. Fill it in within 72 hours before arrival at allindonesia.imigrasi.go.id or in the app; it covers immigration, customs and the health declaration.
Arriving in Labuan BajoMost visitors clear immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya and reach Labuan Bajo on a domestic flight
Bali tourist levyIDR 150,000 per foreign visitor if you enter through Bali, paid at lovebali.baliprov.go.id. It is separate from the visa fee.

Flights, cash, signal and plugs

The free pickup to King Cirox 2 starts at Komodo International (LBJ), a ten-minute drive from the harbour. The usual way in is to pass immigration in Bali, Jakarta or Surabaya, then take a domestic hop east. Direct international routes are few and change often, so check the current schedule before you book.

Cash comes next. The rupiah is the only practical currency in Labuan Bajo, and the ATMs are in town and at the airport, none on the islands. Withdraw before day one; the table gives the usual withdrawal limits and fees.

Between the islands, phone signal comes and goes. An eSIM installed before you fly, or a Telkomsel SIM registered with your passport in town, covers you on land; on board, the boat's booklet lists Starlink Wi-Fi, with no speed promised.

Indonesia runs on 230 V with two-round-pin plugs, types C and F. Every cabin on the boat lists power sockets, so one adapter per person covers a 3D2N.

Water, weather and manners

Tap water is not for drinking anywhere in Indonesia. On the boat that question is settled: mineral water comes free and unlimited on every trip, from a dispenser in the dining room, with tea and coffee alongside. Ashore, buy sealed bottles.

April to November is dry; December to March is wet. The wet months bring short, heavy downpours and the roughest sea, with February the wettest. The harbour master closes sailings when the forecast turns, in the wet season most often but not only then: for three days in August 2026, waves of up to 2.4 m closed Komodo and Padar and left only Rinca open.

Catholics are the majority on Flores, while Labuan Bajo mixes them with Muslim and Bajo seafaring families. Keep shoulders and knees covered away from the water, take your shoes off before entering a mosque, and ask before photographing people. On the dragon trails, stay with the ranger and, as a rule, at least 2 m from any dragon. Guides add advice on clothing colour and other details; take it as their guidance, not as a park rule.

Tap waterNot safe to drink; use sealed bottled or filtered water

SeasonsDry from April to November: little rain and calmer seas, with wind and chop on crossings in July and August. Wet from December to March: short heavy downpours, heaviest in February, and rougher seas from December to February.
Sailing bansThe harbour authority suspends sailings most often in the wet season and during spells of strong south-east wind

Checked 11 October 2026

ReligionFlores is mostly Roman Catholic; Labuan Bajo is a mixed port town with a Muslim minority and Bajo coastal communities
DressCover shoulders and knees in town, in churches, mosques and villages; swimwear only at pools, on beaches and on boats
MannersGive, receive and eat with the right hand; greet with a light handshake or a nod. During Ramadan most restaurants in Labuan Bajo stay open; avoid eating conspicuously near mosques.

Health, and paying the right people

Insurance should cover treatment and evacuation, because a hospital here can want payment before it treats you. The town has two: Siloam Hospitals, the best-equipped on Flores, with a hyperbaric chamber, and RSUD Komodo, the public hospital, with an emergency unit. Serious cases fly to Bali. Dengue and malaria are present, so pack repellent; rabies exists in dogs and monkeys. No vaccination is required for entry.

The second half of the table is about money changing hands. Tourists have been left at the harbour after paying an agent who never paid the boat, as recently as April 2026. The defence is dull and it works: deal with a licensed company, insist on a written itinerary plus an invoice listing boat, dates and inclusions, and send money to a company account rather than to a person at the pier.

Ours, for the record: PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, NIB 1805260128363, an invoice first, then the 50 per cent.

InsuranceTravel insurance with medical cover and emergency evacuation is strongly recommended; add dive cover if you dive
Private hospitalSiloam Hospitals Labuan Bajo, Jl. Gabriel Gampur, +62 385 2440 666; it has a hyperbaric chamber
Public hospitalRSUD Komodo, Labuan Bajo, with an emergency unit; no hyperbaric chamber
PharmaciesAvailable in town with a limited range; bring prescription medicines and sunscreen from home
Emergency numbers112 general; 118 or 119 medical; 110 police; 115 search and rescue
Health risksDengue, chikungunya and malaria are present, so protect yourself against mosquito bites. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys: seek care at once after a bite.

The port and the park

Two authorities decide whether your day goes ahead. The harbour master, KSOP Labuan Bajo, issues each boat's sailing permit against the weather forecast. The Komodo National Park authority controls entry to the islands and sells its tickets online only, via SiOra, one named ticket per passport.

Both checks run on names. Your e-boarding pass at the harbour must match the passenger manifest, and the park ticket is issued to you personally. Hence the request, roughly seven days out, for each guest's passport spelling, and hence your passport comes aboard with you.

Park entry costs a foreign visitor IDR 250,000 per day under PP 36/2024, outside every King Cirox 2 fare. Rangers are charged per group, and harbour and pier charges are not set by the park regulation, so confirm them on your quote before travelling.

The park fees page works the sums for groups of two, four and ten.

Who decidesThe harbour master's office (KSOP Labuan Bajo) issues each boat's sailing permit; the park office (Balai Taman Nasional Komodo) controls access to the park
Boarding passPassengers on boats to the park need an electronic boarding pass, and the name on it must match the passenger list; your boat company registers you
Safety on boardThe harbour master's guideline requires life jackets and liferafts sufficient for everyone on board, no more passengers than the boat's capacity, and a weather check before each sailing permit
Recent closures1 to 8 February 2025: Komodo and Padar closed, Rinca only. 29 December 2025 to 4 February 2026: staged closures, with all tourist boats held from 14 to 20 January 2026. 6 to 8 August 2026: Komodo and Padar closed for waves and wind, Rinca open.

Park entry, Indonesian citizensIDR 50,000 on weekdays; IDR 75,000 at weekends and on public holidays; per person per day
Daily visitor quotaA daily visitor cap has applied since 1 April 2026 at Padar, Rinca and Komodo islands and nearby dive sites, in time sessions. The figure has been revised during the year; your boat company checks the current cap when it registers you.
How tickets are boughtOnline through SiOra (siora.id), the park's own system; no cash at the gate. Each visitor is registered by name and passport number, and your boat company normally does it for you.

FAQ

How long can I stay on a Visa on Arrival?

Thirty days from the day you land, single entry. You can extend it once by another 30 days at an immigration office, applying about a week before the first 30 run out; since June 2025 that visit, as a rule, includes fingerprints.

Do I pay the Bali tourist levy if I connect through Bali?

If you enter Bali, yes: it is a separate per-person levy for foreign visitors, paid online on the Love Bali site, and it is not part of the visa fee. A purely airside transit to Labuan Bajo does not count as entering; check the Love Bali rules for your routing.

Which emergency numbers work in Indonesia?

112 for general emergencies, 118 or 119 for an ambulance, 110 for the police and 115 for search and rescue at sea.

Is it safe to buy a boat trip from someone at the harbour?

It is the riskiest way to buy one. Peak-season tourists without a booking are the usual targets, and stranded-guest cases have continued into 2026. Pay a licensed company against a written invoice naming the boat, the dates and what the fare includes. For King Cirox 2, that company is PT Komodo Explorer Indonesia, NIB 1805260128363.

Which health risks should I prepare for?

Mosquitoes first: dengue, chikungunya and malaria are present on Flores, so pack repellent and cover up at dusk. Rabies exists in dogs and monkeys; after any bite, seek care the same day, and ask your doctor at home about pre-exposure vaccination, because a clinic in town may not have the vaccine on hand that day. Bring prescription medicines in their original packaging with a doctor's letter, and declare them on the All Indonesia arrival card. Pharmacies in Labuan Bajo carry a limited range.
