Flights are the one thing we advise on but do not sell. You buy the ticket; we tell you which one, and we watch the arrival time.

Once you send your hotel name and flight number, both go on the booking sheet next to your bunk or cabin, and the guide reads them from there the day before you sail.

You land at Komodo International (LBJ), ten minutes' drive from where the boat, red hull and white decks, waits. Four routes do the work:

• Bali (DPS): about 70 to 80 minutes, the busiest route, with Garuda, Batik Air, Citilink and Indonesia AirAsia among the carriers.
• Jakarta (CGK): 2.5 to 3 hours non-stop.
• Surabaya (SUB): about 90 minutes, with Super Air Jet on the route.
• Lombok (LOP): about an hour, on smaller Wings Air aircraft.

Whatever the route, two rules apply. Land the day before you sail, because a morning flight that slips an hour is how guests lose their boat. And on the last day, book the flight out after 14:00: the 3D2N ties up again between 10:00 and 11:00, and the pickup carries you from the harbour to the airport or your hotel.

The pickup is the fixed point of the whole trip. On day one of an open trip, a shared car or minibus calls for your group between 10:00 and 11:00, at any Labuan Bajo hotel or at LBJ, and takes everyone to the harbour. The guide confirms your exact slot the day before.

The pickup costs nothing, on every trip. On a private charter the time is agreed when you book, to fit your flight rather than a group.

Want the van to yourselves? Swap the shared car for a 12-seat Toyota HiAce on request, or a coach if the party is larger. Either comes as a written quote within hours, and the invoice changes only once you accept it.

If the hotel or the flight changes after you book, send the new detail in the same thread. The guide resets your slot the day before you sail, and the driver gets the new address, not the old one.

Pick the hotel by who is on the booking, not by the star rating. Six guest situations on King Cirox 2, each matched to a partner hotel.

• A solo traveller with one Gresik bunk. You pay for a bed, so keep the room lean. Komodo Lodge has 30 air-conditioned rooms and Eco Tree O'Tel has 17. Both sit in the lowest price band, a five-minute walk from the harbour.
• A couple in Malang or Madiun, the balcony cabins. Spend the night before or after on land. Sudamala Resort Komodo is a beachfront resort on Pede Beach, ten minutes by car, with an infinity pool. AYANA Komodo Resort, Waecicu Beach adds a private jetty, fifteen minutes out.
• A family using the extra beds. Triple 888 Suites offers apartment-style units with kitchenettes, about 300 m from the port. Luwansa Beach Resort has a pool and sea-facing rooms.
• A group taking the whole boat. Meruorah Komodo Labuan Bajo has 145 rooms on the marina waterfront; Katamaran Hotel & Resort Komodo has 149 on Waecicu Beach, so the group sleeps under one roof.
• A late landing or an early flight home. Parlezo by Kagum Hotels stands about 600 m from Komodo Airport, with free parking. Crowne Plaza Labuan Bajo by IHG sits inside the airport complex.
• A diver adding days after the trip. Laprima Hotel Labuan Bajo has its own port on Pede Beach for island-hopping departures. The Seraya Resort Komodo is an island resort of 25 bungalows, reached by boat.
