Komodo Island dragon walk: rangers, trails and the Rinca swap on King Cirox 2

Updated 11 October 2026

On Komodo Island you see wild Komodo dragons on a ranger-led walk of 45 to 120 minutes; sightings are likely, never guaranteed. King Cirox 2 Phinisi lands there on day two of the 2D1N, 3D2N, 4D3N and 5D4N routes. On the open trip you choose Komodo village or Rinca, subject to quota availability. Each foreign visitor pays IDR 250,000 a day in park entry.

Wild animals with a ranger

Komodo is no zoo. Its dragons are wild and go where they please, so a walk of 45 to 120 minutes makes a sighting likely, never certain. A park ranger leads every walk on the trails and decides the pace and how close the group gets.

Ranger-guided treks start at the Loh Liang ranger station. The park has short, medium and long trails, and day itineraries take the shorter ones; allow 45 to 120 minutes on the ground. The walking is easy. The heat is the effort: there is little shade, so the walk feels longer at midday than its distance suggests.

The open-trip booklet prints this stop as Komodo village, with Komodo dragons; we confirm the exact landing with your booking. Either way you walk with a ranger and you keep to the trail. Read the table below for the best window, the crowd months and the trek time, then pack for the sun.

What it is not: not a zoo: the dragons are wild and sightings are likely but never guaranteed · no trekking without a park ranger

Shoes, sleeves and fees

Have three things ready when the tender lands. Closed shoes, because the trail is dry ground and you share it with large reptiles. Long sleeves or a lot of sunscreen, because the shade runs out quickly. And water, a litre each.

Under PP 36/2024 the park charges each visitor by the day: IDR 250,000 for foreign visitors, IDR 50,000 for Indonesian citizens on weekdays and IDR 75,000 at weekends. The ranger fee and other local levies are paid separately and change; we have not verified a current figure, so we do not print one. None of these are in the boat fare, on the open trip or on a charter.

Your passport travels with you on the day: the harbour's electronic boarding pass is checked against the names on the manifest. The fee table below shows the official rates; bring enough cash for the levies paid on site.

Park fees, paid on top of every fare
International visitorsIDR 250,000 per person per day
Indonesian visitorsIDR 50,000 per person per day · IDR 75,000 weekends & holidays

Paid separately, online through SiOra, in each visitor's name; ranger and pier charges are extra and can change. Regulation: PP 36/2024 · Verified 10 October 2026.

Day two, or Rinca

Every multi-day route on King Cirox 2 has its dragon walk on day two. The 2D1N, 4D3N and 5D4N print Komodo Island after Padar. The 3D2N open trip prints Komodo village or Rinca: choose one, subject to quota availability. You give us your preference at booking, and if the park's daily quota for it is full on the day, the other island is visited. Both are ranger walks with dragons, so the swap changes the island, not the purpose.

The full-day charter's sample route goes to Rinca instead: Kelor, Rinca and Manjarite, agreed with us before the deposit. Rinca is 60 to 90 minutes from Kelor by our estimate.

From Komodo the 3D2N moves on to lunch aboard, served on leaf-shaped plates at the dining table, then Pink Beach, 30 to 60 minutes away. Day two is the long day of the trip; eat breakfast before Padar and save energy for the afternoon water. The route block below shows the order, with open-trip fares from IDR 3,350,000 (≈ USD 206) per person.

Treat the times as planning figures, not a timetable; the sea sets the real ones. The pickup is the one time we hold ourselves to.

FAQ

Is the ranger fee included in the boat fare?

No. Neither the open-trip fare nor the charter price covers the ranger or park entry, which costs a foreign visitor IDR 250,000 a day.

Can children join the dragon walk?

Yes. The walk is rated easy and open to all levels, and the ranger keeps the group at a safe distance. Keep small children close and in closed shoes.

Is a dragon sighting guaranteed?

No. The dragons are wild. Sightings are likely, but nobody can promise one. If seeing a dragon is the single reason for your trip, choose a route that lands on Komodo or Rinca on a day with time to spare: the multi-day routes all include one dragon walk on day two, and the full-day sample route includes Rinca. We do not sell dragon guarantees, and you should be wary of anyone who does.

What is the difference between Komodo and Rinca for the walk?

Both are ranger-led walks among wild dragons inside the national park. On the open trip you pick one at booking; when the park has no quota left for your pick that day, you walk on the other. The full-day sample uses Rinca.
